Abstract
This study aimed to identify the translanguaging strategies used by English Language Teachhing (ELT) students in argumentative essay writing and to explain why students employed these strategies during the writing process. A qualitative research design was employed. The study was conducted at the English Department of Universitas PGRI Madiun during 2025/2026 academic year. The data consisted of five argumentative essays produced by ELT students in an Essay Writing course and semi-structured interviews with the three participants. The essays were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify ttranslanguaging strategies based on the frameworks of Krause & Prinsloo (2016), Saputra (2015), Styati & Irawati (2023), and Zhang et al. (2022), while the interview data were analysed by identifying and interpreting students responses regarding their reasons for using translanguaging. The trustworthiness the finding was ensure through triangulation, cross-checking, and expert judgement. The findings revealed three translanguaging strategies: translanguaging resemblance, complementary translanguaging, and congruent-lexicalization translanguaging. translanguaging resemblance emerged as the dominant strategy, followed by congruent-lexicalization, and complementary translanguaging. The interview findings indicated that students used translanguaging to generate and develop ideas, organise arguments, improve writing quality, and increase confidence during the writing process. these findings suggested that translanguaging functioned as a cognitive and linguistic resource that supported students in constructing English argumentative essays by facilitating idea development, argument organisation, and meaning-making. However, the findings should be interpreted with the context of the study’s limitations, as the research analysed only five students essays and included interview from three participants.
