Abstract

The skin is a protective organ that plays an important role in maintaining the body's physiological balance; therefore, its health and moisture must be properly maintained. One approach is the use of a natural-based moisturizing gel containing a combination of mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) and but-terfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) extracts. This study aimed to determine the effect of different concentrations of mangosteen peel and butterfly pea flower extracts on the physical quality and antibacterial activity of a moisturizing gel. This research employed a true experimental design. Phytochemical screening showed that both extracts contained flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. The extracts were formulated into four formulations: F0 as the gel base without extracts, F1 containing 25% mangosteen peel extract and 75% butterfly pea flower extract, F2 containing 50%:50%, and F3 containing 75%:25%. The gel preparations were evaluated for their physical characteristics, including organo-leptic properties, which showed a yellowish-brown color, a characteristic extract odor, and a jelly-like texture. The average viscosity values were 2,883 mPa·s (F0), 2,486 mPa·s (F1), 2,913 mPa·s (F2), and 3,256 mPa·s (F3). The average spreadability values were 6.36 cm (F0), 5.46 cm (F1), 5.50 cm (F2), and 5.10 cm (F3). The average pH values were 4.93 (F0), 5.43 (F1), 5.16 (F2), and 6.20 (F3). All formulations exhibited good homogeneity. Antibacterial activity was evalu-ated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using the disc diffusion method. The average inhibition zones against Staphylococcus aureus were 0.0 mm for F0 and the negative control, 9.5567 mm (F1), 9.5600 mm (F2), 10.4500 mm (F3), and 15.7633 mm for the positive control. These values were greater than those against Escherichia coli, which showed average inhibition zones of 0.0 mm for F0 and the negative control, 3.0400 mm (F1), 3.6000 mm (F2), 4.0133 mm (F3), and 5.6233 mm for the positive control.
