Abstract

The decreasing availability of fossil fuels and the increasing demand for energy are driving the development of alternative fuels that are renewable and environmentally friendly. One potential raw material source is oil extracted from tofu dregs. Tofu dregs, an agro-industrial waste product that still contains oil, has the potential to be processed into biodiesel through a transesterification process using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as a catalyst. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of tofu dregs oil as a biodiesel feedstock, analyze the effect of the washing process on biodiesel quality parameters, and identify the biodiesel compound composition using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Biodiesel was synthesized through a transesterification reaction using tofu dregs oil with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and methanol as catalysts. The resulting biodiesel was then washed with boiling water until it reached a neutral pH. Quality parameters analyzed included density, viscosity, water content, and FAME compound composition using GC-MS. The results showed that tofu dregs oil has a density of 0.96 g/mL, making it potentially useful as a biodiesel feedstock. The washing process improved the biodiesel quality, as indicated by a decrease in density from 1.04 g/mL to 0.89 g/mL, thus meeting the requirements of SNI 7182:2015. The viscosity value also decreased from 4.5 mm²/s to 3.5 mm²/s and remained within the SNI 7182:2015 standard range of 2.3–6.0 mm²/s. The water content test results of 0.045% indicate that the biodiesel meets the maximum water content limit according to SNI 7182:2015. GC-MS analysis showed that the biodiesel was dominated by Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) compounds with a total area of 99.12%, consisting of methyl palmitate (52.00%), methyl oleate (40.75%), methyl linoleate (2.95%), methyl stearate (2.48%), and methyl myristate (0.94%). The dominance of these FAME compounds indicates that the transesterification process was effective, so that the resulting biodiesel has suitable characteristics as an alternative fuel based on vegetable oil.
