ABSTRACT Faris Putra Budi Setiawan. 2026. The Effect of Variations in Binder Types on the Quality of Candlenut Shell-Based Biobriquettes. Undergraduate Thesis. Supervisor (I): Dyan Hatining Ayu S., S.ST., M.T.; (II): Ade Trisnawati, S.Pd., M.Pd This study aimed to investigate the effect of different binder types on the quality of biobriquettes produced from candlenut shell charcoal and to determine the best composition based on physical characteristics, moisture content, calorific value, and burning rate. The binders used in this study were tapioca starch, sago starch, and molasses, with candlenut shell charcoal-to-binder compositions of 50:50 and 70:30. The candlenut shells were first carbonized, pulverized, and then mixed with the binders according to the specified treatment variations. The resulting biobriquettes were dried and tested for their physical characteristics, moisture content, calorific value, and burning rate. The results showed that biobriquettes using tapioca starch as a binder had the best physical characteristics, producing briquettes that were compact, intact, and less prone to breakage. Sago starch produced less compact and easily crumbled biobriquettes, while molasses resulted in biobriquettes that remained wet and sticky after the drying process. The moisture content test showed that the 50:50 composition using tapioca starch produced a moisture content of 28.04%, while the 70:30 composition produced 29.20%. The calorific values obtained were 2177.1 cal/g and 2014.6 cal/g, respectively. Bothvaluesdid not meet the requirements of SNI 01-6235-2000. Based on the overall test results, the best composition was candlenut shell charcoal and tapioca starch at a ratio of 50:50 because it exhibited better physical characteristics, lower moisture content, and a higher calorific value than the 70:30 composition. These results indicate that candlenut shell waste has potential as a raw material for biobriquette production, although further optimization of the production process and material composition is still required to improve the quality of the resulting biobriquettes.
