Abstract

Spatial reasoning is the ability to understand, visualize, and mentally manipulate objects and their relationships. Many students have not yet mastered spatial visualization, mental rotation, and spatial orientation. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach in improving students' spatial reasoning. The subjects were sixth-grade students from SDN 01 Tawangrejo and SDN 02 Tawangrejo. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test control group. A total of 37 students participated, selected through saturation sampling, and data were collected using spatial reasoning pre-tests and post-tests. Data analysis included normality, equivalence, and hypothesis tests. The results indicated differences in students' spatial reasoning before and after instruction using the RME approach. A significance level of 0.01 was applied. The significance value for overall spatial reasoning was 0.001 (< 0.01). For specific aspects, the values were 0.021 (> 0.01) for spatial visualization, 0.001 (< 0.01) for mental rotation, and 0.013 (> 0.01) for spatial orientation. Thus, the RME approach was effective in improving spatial reasoning and mental rotation but not sufficiently effective for spatial visualization and spatial orientation.
