Abstract

This study aims to improve the critical reading skills of fifth-grade students at SDN Sendangagung, Sumberrejo District, through the use of visual text media. The background of this research is the low level of students’ critical reading skills, which is indicated by difficulties in identifying main ideas, summarizing texts, and providing critical responses to reading materials. Conventional reading instruction with limited use of learning media is considered one of the contributing factors to this problem. This study employed a qualitative approach using Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles. The research subjects consisted of six fifth-grade students. Each cycle included planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through critical reading tests, observations of student and teacher activities, field notes, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive qualitative and quantitative techniques. The results of the study indicate that the use of visual text media significantly improved students’ critical reading skills. The class average score and the percentage of learning mastery increased from the pre-cycle to Cycle I and further improved in Cycle II, achieving classical mastery learning. In addition, students’ learning activities and engagement in reading lessons improved, as shown by increased participation in discussions, confidence in expressing opinions, and ability to analyze reading texts.
