Abstract
ABSTRACT Indah Dwijayanti. 2026. Improving Children's Speaking Ability Through Letter Cards (Case Study at TK Gayam 2). Undergraduate Thesis. Early Childhood Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Advisors: (I) Dian Ratna Afifah, M.Psi., Psychologist, (II) Dr. Rosyida Nurul Anwar, S.Pd., M.Pd.I. This study aims to provide an in-depth description of the process of improving the speaking ability of a 6-year-old child with the initials MRA, who experiences speech delay, through the use of letter card media. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on MRA’s individual experience within the learning context at TK Dharma Wanita Gayam 2. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and parents, and documentation of the child’s developmental progress. The results of the study indicate that the consistent and structured use of letter cards has a positive impact on MRA’s speaking ability. Direct interaction with the letter cards helps MRA recognize initial sounds, pronounce simple syllables, and increase confidence in speaking in front of teachers and peers. The improvement in speaking ability occurs gradually, starting from the ability to mention letters, combine sounds, and eventually pronounce simple words with clearer articulation. In addition, MRA’s emotional engagement in playing with letter cards contributes to accelerating the development of speaking skills. This study confirms that letter card media can serve as an effective alternative learning strategy for children with speech delay, particularly when implemented in a warm, supportive, and child-centered environment. It also provides a detailed description of a child’s developmental dynamics in a real-life context, making it a useful reference for early childhood educators in designing more personalized and responsive learning interventions.
