Abstract
This study aimed to improve early reading skills and speaking skills of first-grade students at SD Negeri Babad IV, Kedungadem District, through the implementation of the phonics method assisted by picture story cards. This research employed a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, involving 7 first-grade students as research subjects. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through early reading skill tests, observation sheets of teacher and student activities, speaking skill assessment rubrics, and field notes. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the study showed that the implementation of the phonics method significantly improved students’ early reading skills. In the initial condition, students’ early reading ability was categorized as low. After the implementation of actions in Cycle I, students’ reading skills improved but had not yet optimally met the success indicators. In Cycle II, students’ early reading skills improved significantly, and most students achieved the predetermined mastery criteria. In addition, the use of picture story card media proved effective in improving students’ speaking skills, particularly in terms of fluency, pronunciation clarity, and speaking confidence. The improvement in speaking skills occurred gradually from the pre-cycle stage to Cycle I and Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the phonics method assisted by picture story cards is effective in improving early reading and speaking skills of first-grade students at SD Negeri Babad IV, Kedungadem District. This method and media create an active, contextual, and developmentally appropriate Indonesian language learning environment for early-grade students.
