Abstract

This research is motivated by the low explanatory text writing skills among fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kuncen II Padangan, caused by the lack of innovative learning media and students' difficulties in organizing ideas systematically. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by sequential image media in improving the quality of explanatory text writing instruction, and (2) to measure the improvement in explanatory text writing skills after implementing the PBL model with sequential images. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 6 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kuncen II Padangan. Data collection techniques included observation, tests, and non-tests. The data were analyzed using an interactive model comprising data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed a significant improvement in both the quality of learning activities and students' writing skills. This is evidenced by the increase in teacher activity percentage from 60% in Cycle 1 to 100% in Cycle 2; student activity from 50% in Cycle 1 to 83.3% in Cycle 2; and student motivation from 71.6% in Cycle 1 to 85% in Cycle 2. The explanatory text writing skills improved, with the class average score rising from 70 in Cycle 1 to 81.6 in Cycle 2. Furthermore, classical mastery significantly increased from 50% in Cycle 1 to 83.3% in Cycle 2. These results exceeded the predetermined success indicator of at least 80%. The use of sequential images proved effective in helping students organize events logically, while the PBL model enhanced student engagement in problem-solving. It is concluded that the application of the Problem-Based Learning model and sequential image media can improve the quality of learning activities and enhance explanatory text writing skills for fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kuncen II Padangan.
