Keywords: writing, free poetry, media, and the environment This study aims to describe (1) the application of environmental media can improve the learning of writing free poetry of fifth grade students of SDN 1 Kutorejo, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency and (2) the learning outcomes of fifth grade students of SDN 1 Kutorejo, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency in learning to write free poetry using environmental media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the application of environmental media can improve the learning of writing free poetry of fifth grade students of SDN 1 Kutorejo, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency. This is evidenced by the behavior of students in class during learning activities using environmental media that is apparently able to change student behavior along with the improvement of students' ability to write free poetry. Student activeness in providing responses and answering questions from the teacher in stage 1 of cycle I is still low due to lack of confidence and lack of understanding of the material taught by the teacher. Meanwhile, in cycle II, in terms of student activeness in providing responses to learning materials, it is quite good and is in the very good category. Students who answer questions from the teacher are good and are also very active in doing the assignments that have been given, and (2) the learning outcomes of writing free poetry using environmental media have improved. The improvement in each cycle can be seen from the average student score, which increased from 64.2% in cycle I in the sufficient category to 90.6% in cycle II in the very good category. The results of the test from cycle I to cycle II showed a 26.2% increase.
