Abstract

Vocabulary learning plays an important role in developing students’ language skills at the elementary school level. However, vocabulary instruction is often conducted using conventional methods that do not actively engage students. This study aims to describe the use of the Make A Match method and picture media in Indonesian vocabulary learning, the problems encountered, and the solutions implemented in Grade IV of SD Negeri Drenges, Sugihwaras District, Bojonegoro Regency. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. The research participants consisted of one fourth-grade teacher and thirteen fourth-grade students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through technique and source triangulation. The findings indicate that the use of the Make A Match method assisted by picture media creates a more active and meaningful vocabulary learning process. Most students showed increased participation and vocabulary understanding, although some students still required additional guidance. The problems encountered included differences in students’ abilities, limited instructional time, classroom management challenges, and limited picture media. The teacher addressed these problems by providing student guidance, improving time management, strengthening classroom management, and developing more varied picture media. In conclusion, the Make A Match method combined with picture media can serve as an alternative strategy for teaching Indonesian vocabulary in elementary schools to enhance students’ participation and vocabulary comprehension when implemented with proper planning and management.
