Abstract
ABSTRACT Dwi Yuni Astuti. 2025. An Analysis of the Readability Level of Mathematical Word Problem Sentences and Its Benefits for Improving Learning among Second Grade Students of SDN Sambiroto, Kapas District, Bojonegoro Regency. Thesis. Master’s Program in Indonesian Language and Literature Education, Graduate School, Universitas PGRI Madiun. Supervisors: (1) Dr. V. Teguh Suharto, M.Pd., (2) Dr. Muhammad Binur Huda, M.Pd. Mathematical word problems are often regarded as a bridge between abstract mathematical concepts and their application in everyday life. However, in practice, many elementary school students, especially those in lower grades, experience difficulties in solving word problems not due to a lack of mathematical concept mastery, but because of limitations in understanding the language used in the problem statements. This issue was also found among second grade students of SDN Sambiroto, Kapas District, Bojonegoro Regency, as indicated by low student participation, self-confidence, and learning outcomes in mathematics. This study aims to analyze the readability level of mathematical word problem sentences and to describe the benefits of readability analysis in improving the quality of mathematics learning for second grade students of SDN Sambiroto. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach. The research subjects included second grade students and mathematical word problems used in classroom instruction. Data were collected through observation, performance tests in the form of solving mathematical word problems, and student response questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis techniques to describe the readability level of word problem sentences and their impact on learning. The results showed that several mathematical word problem sentences had readability levels that were not fully appropriate for the reading abilities of second grade students. This condition was caused by the use of overly long sentences, complex sentence structures, and vocabulary that was unfamiliar to students. These factors negatively affected students’ comprehension of the problems. After analyzing and revising the readability of the problem sentences, improvements were observed in various aspects of learning. Student activity increased with an average of 8.65% in the very high category, 26.08% in the high category, 39.9% in the moderate category, 17.39% in the low category, and 8.69% in the very low category. In addition, students’ understanding of mathematical word problems and their positive responses toward mathematics learning also improved. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the readability level of mathematical word problem sentences plays an important role in the success of mathematics learning for second grade elementary school students. The analysis and adjustment of sentence readability can enhance students’ comprehension, learning outcomes, and positive responses to mathematics learning. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to pay closer attention to linguistic aspects when designing mathematical word problems so that they are appropriate to students’ reading abilities and cognitive development.
