Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of text-based reading instruction and to examine the improvement of reading skills of fifth-grade students at SDN Widodaren 2, Gerih District, Ngawi Regency. The background of this research is the low level of students’ reading skills, which are characterized by limited reading fluency, difficulties in understanding text content, and low interest in reading activities. Conventional reading instruction with minimal use of appropriate learning media has resulted in less effective learning processes. Therefore, text media were used as an alternative instructional medium to improve students’ reading skills. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were fifth-grade students of SDN Widodaren 2. Data were collected through classroom observations, reading skill tests, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods supported by quantitative data to identify improvements in students’ reading skills. The results indicate that the implementation of text-based reading instruction improves students’ reading skills. Improvements were observed in reading fluency, comprehension of text content, ability to identify important information, and accuracy in answering questions based on the text. In addition, students’ participation and interest in reading activities increased. Therefore, text media are effective for reading instruction in fifth-grade elementary school students and can serve as an innovative and appropriate learning medium in Indonesian language learning.
