Abstract

This study aims to improve the Indonesian speaking skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Dukohkidul Ngasem Bojonegoro through the implementation of the role play method. The research was motivated by students’ low speaking performance, particularly in fluency, vocabulary accuracy, intonation, and self-confidence when speaking in front of the class.Instruments used in this study included speaking assessment rubrics, teacher and student activity observation sheets, and student worksheets (LKPD). The results showed an improvement in students’ speaking skills across both cycles. In the first cycle, students’ speaking abilities were categorized as “fair,” with major difficulties in confidence and intonation accuracy. In the second cycle, significant improvements were observed in all indicators, particularly in fluency, vocabulary use, and confidence. The learning atmosphere became more active, enjoyable, and interactive because the role play method provided direct learning experiences through simulated real-life situations. In conclusion, the role play method is effective in enhancing the Indonesian speaking skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri Dukohkidul Ngasem Bojonegoro. This study recommends the use of role play as an alternative method in Indonesian language learning, especially at the elementary school level, to improve students’ speaking competencies.
