Keywords: writing, free poetry based on the surrounding environment, and a contextual approach This study aims to describe and explain (1) the application of a contextual approach in learning to write free poetry based on the surrounding environment by fifth grade students of SD Negeri 1 Pelem, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency and (2) the activities of fifth grade students of SD Negeri 1 Pelem, Kertosono District, Nganjuk Regency in participating in learning to write free poetry based on the surrounding environment through a contextual approach. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the average value of students is 61.97 with a sufficient category. The average value after the first cycle of action is 74.08 with a sufficient category. The average value of students after the second cycle of action is 81.80 with a good category, and (2) student activity towards natural media as a way of learning to write free poetry based on the natural environment is very positive. Based on the results of interviews in cycle I, on average they responded positively to the learning that had been delivered by the teacher. In addition, based on the results of observations in Cycle I, 75% of the total number of students, they paid close attention to the teacher's explanation during the learning process, even in Cycle II the number of students who liked it was 90%, they really liked learning with natural media around. Likewise with student activity, in cycle I students who were inactive were 25%, but in Cycle II, students who were inactive decreased to 10% or around 4 students.
