Abstract
This study aims to describe the linguistic variation that emerges in digital communication through WhatsApp among students of SMP Negeri 2 Ngetos in the 2025/2026 academic year. The data consist of ten screenshots of WhatsApp group conversations involving interactions between teachers and students. The analysis employs sociolinguistic and pragmatic approaches, focusing on two major categories of influencing factors: social factors (age, gender, and occupation) and situational factors (degree of formality, interlocutor, and conversational context). The findings indicate that social factors significantly shape language choice. Teachers tend to use standard, polite, and instructional language, whereas students frequently employ informal linguistic forms such as slang, abbreviations, emoticons, and spontaneous expressions characteristic of adolescent communication. Gender differences also influence linguistic behavior: female students generally use more polite and expressive forms, while male students display a more relaxed, humorous, and occasionally coarse style. Occupational differences between teachers and students further produce distinct registers aligned with their communicative roles. Situational factors likewise contribute to linguistic variation. In formal contexts, participants use more standard, structured, and polite language. In contrast, informal contexts prompt the use of nonstandard forms, humor, and emoticons that reinforce peer solidarity. Interactions with teachers are marked by politeness and concise responses, whereas interactions among students reveal close-knit, expressive group dynamics typical of adolescents. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with the researcher as the primary instrument. The findings contribute to language education, particularly in understanding register variation, politeness strategies, and the dynamics of digital communication among adolescents.
