Keywords: reading starters, media, and visual card This study aims to describe (1) the application of visual card media can improve the initial reading ability of second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan, Ngetos District, Nganjuk Regency and (2) the learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan, Ngetos District, Nganjuk Regency in learning to read beginning using visual card media. This study is a classroom action research with two research cycles. The results of this study are (1) the application of visual card media can improve the initial reading ability of second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan, Ngetos District, Nganjuk Regency. In the first cycle, the average value of students was 76.14 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the moderate category and the average value of the second cycle increased to 86.70 which, if categorized into a scale of five, is in the good category. This means that there is an increase in initial reading ability with the application of picture word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan, and (2) The learning outcomes of second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan, Ngetos District, Nganjuk Regency in learning to read beginning using visual card media have increased. This is proven in the first cycle, there were 9 students (60%) who completed the beginning reading using picture word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan and in the second cycle, 13 students (86,67%) completed understanding the ability to read beginning with the application of picture word card media in second-grade students of SD Negeri 2 Klodan.
