Abstract

Badminton is a sport that relies heavily on arm muscle strength, especially for effective smashes. Initial observations indicate that students of the Badminton Student Activity Unit (UKM) of PGRI Madiun University still have deficiencies in arm muscle power, which results in less sharp and powerful smashes. This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the effect of implementing training methods using resistance bands and dumbbells on improving the explosive arm muscle ability of students of the Badminton Student Activity Unit (UKM) of PGRI Madiun University, as well as comparing the effectiveness of the two training methods. This study applied an experimental method with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The study population consisted of all students of the Badminton Sports UKM of PGRI Madiun University, with a sample of 26 male students selected through a purposive sampling method based on certain criteria. The sample was divided into two experimental groups using the ordinal pairing technique. The first group was given resistance band training treatment and the second group was given dumbbell training treatment. The training was carried out for 6 weeks with a frequency of 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), with a total of 18 meetings. The instrument for collecting arm muscle power data used the Two-Hand Medicine Ball Put test. Data were analyzed using normality tests (Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk), homogeneity tests (Levene Statistic), and t-tests (Independent Samples Test) with the help of SPSS 25. The results of data analysis show that the data are normally distributed and homogeneous. The t-test shows a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05) and a t-count value of 6.563 (> t-table 1.708). This indicates that resistance band and dumbbell training significantly influence the increase in arm muscle power of students of the Badminton Student Activity Unit of PGRI Madiun University. Although both methods are effective, this study concludes that resistance bands will be more effective and efficient than dumbbells in increasing arm muscle power. Increasing arm muscle power through these two training methods is expected to support smashing ability in badminton games.
