Abstract
Language serves not only as a tool for communication but also as a means of constructing identity, negotiating social relationships, and maintaining social harmony. Politeness is a crucial aspect of sociolinguistics that maintains harmony, fosters solidarity, and shapes interpersonal dynamics. This study examines the use of positive politeness strategies in the 2024 film Red One through the lens of sociolinguistics by investigating the ways in which characters employ linguistic strategies to build solidarity, minimize social distance, and reflect cultural values. The aims of this study are (1) to identify the types of positive politeness strategies used in the film and (2) to analyze how these strategies construct social identity and power dynamics among characters. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through repeated film viewings, transcription of character dialogues, and categorization. Analysis interactive model, including data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that characters frequently use strategies such as noticing the hearer’s needs, in group identity markers, jokes, compliments, and inclusive language. These strategies are used to reduce social distance, build cooperation, and signal respect or familiarity. Furthermore, the use of these strategies reflects deeper cultural values such as teamwork, loyalty, and hierarchical respect. This research contributes to sociolinguistics by illustrating how cinematic language mirrors real life interpersonal communication and serves as a reflection of social norms, power structures, and identity construction.
