Abstract

This research serves to improve the official letter writing skills of fifth-grade students at SDN Serag, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency, through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. Initial conditions revealed low class average scores of 53.38 with a classical mastery of only 12.5%. The study used descriptive qualitative method with a classroom action research (CAR) design, implemented in two cycles. The subjects of the study were 16 fifth-grade students at SDN Serag. The research procedures included planning, implementation, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The Data collection techniques utilized were participant observation, interviews, written performance tests, and documentation. Cycle I results showed an increase in the average score to 72.95 with 63% mastery. Although an improvement was observed, the 75% classical mastery target was not yet achieved. In Cycle II, a significant increase occurred, with an average score of 82.5 and 82% mastery, surpassing the target. The advantages of PBL include increased student-teacher activity, student-centered learning, deep conceptual understanding, and the development of critical thinking, collaboration, and independence. Initial weaknesses, such as difficulty identifying problems and discussion dominance, were successfully addressed in Cycle II. The conclusion indicates that PBL is effective in enhancing official letter writing skills and students' soft skills.
