Abstract
This study aimed to describe and analyze the planning, implementation, as well as constraints and solutions in the implementation of essay writing learning by out-of-school writing method. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR) with a qualitative approach implemented in two cycles. The subjects of the study were 15 grade VI students of SDN 1 Karanglolor, Sukorejo District, Ponorogo Regency by involving class teachers and principals as additional data sources. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, documentation, and analysis of students’ essay writing learning outcomes. The results of the study showed that learning essay writing by out-of-school writing method was able to improve students’ motivation and writing skills. The surrounding environment of the school becomes a concrete source of inspiration that encourages students to pour ideas into the form of essays with the correct structure. Obstacles encountered included students’ difficulties in developing ideas, vocabulary limitations, as well as weather factors. The applied solutions included the provision of essay frameworks, vocabulary exercises, and the adjustment of learning locations. In conclusion, the out-of-school writing method proved to be effective in improving elementary students’ essay writing skills creatively, contextually, and enjoyably.
