Abstract
This research aims to improve the reading and writing skills of seventh grade A students at SMP Negeri 1 Kendal through the “Smart Reading, Great Writing” program. The problem addressed in this study was the students’ low interest and ability in understanding texts and expressing ideas in written form. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through reading and writing skill tests, observation sheets, and documentation. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading and writing skills from cycle I to cycle II. The average reading score increased from 65.3 to 80.6, while writing skills improved from 62.5 to 82.1. In addition, students’ activeness in the learning process also increased. In conclusion, the “Smart Reading, Great Writing” program was effective in enhancing students’ literacy skills.
