Abstract
Linguistic politeness in social interaction is an essential aspect that must be applied in everyday communication. This is reflected in the politeness strategies used in the social interactions of the Lamaholot community in Riangbao Village, Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, which embody the richness of local cultural values that are alive and passed down through generations. This study aims to describe the application and violation of the principles of linguistic politeness in the social interactions of the Lamaholot community in Riangbao Village. The focus of this research is based on Geoffrey Leech’s theory of politeness principles, which consists of six maxims: the tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, allowing the researcher to directly observe the communication practices of indigenous people in their daily lives. Data were collected through participant observation, observation of the social environment, and field notes during the researcher’s stay with the community as part of the “Muda Berdaya untuk Kedaulatan Pangan” (MBKP) program under the MSIB Batch 7 in 2024.The findings reveal that the Lamaholot community predominantly applies the principles of linguistic politeness in their social interactions, particularly in communication with outsiders. Of the 44 speech data collected, all six of Leech’s maxims were identified, with the agreement maxim appearing most frequently. The application of this maxim can be observed through polite expressions, attentiveness, and a strong emphasis on social harmony and respect for customary norms and shared agreements. However, five data instances were also found to indicate violations of the politeness principles, most of which occurred in informal contexts or within family interactions. These violations reflect the contextual nature of language use, which depends on social closeness and situational factors. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the principles of linguistic politeness are not only part of the communication ethics of the Lamaholot people but also reflect the cultural values that have been passed down from generation to generation.
