Abstract
This research is motivated by the problem of students' low writing skills have not yet developed optimally. Students often experience difficulties in organizing ideas, arranging story lines, and writing ideas in an orderly manner and according to linguistic rules. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of the use of folklore books on the writing skills of students in the ASKIA study group at Al Mardliyyah Demangan Progressive Middle School. This study applies a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The subjects in this study were 10 students in the ASKIA study group who were selected purposively. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, writing tests, and documentation, with data analysis including descriptive statistics, normality tests, and paired sample t-tests. The results of the study showed a significant increase in students' writing skills after the treatment. The average pretest score was 34.00 and increased to 65.50 in the posttest. The results of the paired sample t-test showed a significance value <0.001 with a calculated t of 12.714, which means there was a significant difference between the scores before and after the treatment. The distribution of students' scores also shifted: before the treatment, most students were in the sufficient (60%) and less (30%) categories, but after the treatment, 70% of students were in the good category and 20% of students were in the excellent category. In addition, improvements also occurred in every aspect of the assessment, namely story structure, clarity of ideas and plot, use of language and linguistic rules, content creativity, and delivery of moral messages. These results indicate that folklore books are not only effective in improving students' writing skills, but also able to develop important elements in narrative writing in a meaningful and contextual manner. Based on these results, it can be concluded that folklore books are effective for improving students' writing skills in learning activities.
