Abstract

Social anxiety is a common form of psychological disorder experienced by students in early adolescence, especially in junior high school. Symptoms such as nervousness when speaking in public, avoiding social interactions, and fear of being negatively judged by others often hinder students' social development and academic achievement. At SMP Negeri 2 Nglames, a number of seventh-grade students have been found showing signs of social anxiety; however, the guidance services offered are still general and have not addressed more specific interventions. Based on this situation, targeted counseling service strategies are needed to reduce the social anxiety experienced by students. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling using social modeling techniques in reducing social anxiety among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Nglames for the 2024/2025 academic year. The research employed a quantitative experimental approach with a one group pretest-posttest design. Eight students with high levels of social anxiety were selected through purposive sampling from a population of 63 students. Data were collected using a social anxiety scale questionnaire and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Counseling was provided in several sessions designed according to the stages of social modeling technique such as attentional, retention, production, and vicarious learning, allowing students to learn through observation and imitation of adaptive social behaviors. The research results indicate that there is a significant reduction in social anxiety after students participated in group counseling using social modeling techniques. This change is evidenced by the decrease in anxiety scores in the post-test compared to the pre-test. These findings suggest that social modeling techniques are effective in shaping more positive social behaviors and enhancing students' self-confidence in interactions. Therefore, group counseling using social modeling techniques can be recommended as an intervention strategy to address social anxiety among middle school students.
