Abstract
Nomophobia is an anxiety disorder that arises from excessive dependence on smartphones, characterized by feelings of anxiety, restlessness, or fear when individuals are unable to access digital devices. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of group counseling services using the rational emotive imagery technique in reducing students’ tendency toward nomophobia. This research employed a quantitative method with a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design. The population consisted of 10th-grade students in the Visual Communication Design program, and the sample comprised students with high levels of nomophobia as indicated by high scores on a nomophobia questionnaire. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a self-developed nomophobia questionnaire that had undergone validity and reliability testing. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The effectiveness test using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.027, which is less than 0.05. This finding indicates that group counseling services using the rational emotive imagery technique are effective in reducing students’ tendency toward nomophobia. These results support the use of rational emotive imagery as a psychological intervention to address excessive smartphone use among adolescents.
