Abstract
This study aimed to describe the implementation of digital mind mapping and cue cards in teaching speaking skills to seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Madiun, focusing on how to teach speaking using these media, encountered challenges, and solutions. The research sought to explore how these tools could enhance students’ engagement, confidence, and speaking abilities in descriptive text learning. The study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Data were collected over five months from January to May 2025 at SMPN 5 Madiun. Primary data sources included classroom observations, interviews with students and the teacher, and teaching modules, while secondary data sources comprised students’ speaking test results and documentation. Research instruments included observation checklists, interview guidelines, and documentation forms. Data were collected through triangulation: observation, interviews, and documentation. The research procedure consisted of preparation, data collection, analysis, and reporting. The findings revealed that digital mind mapping helped students visually organize ideas and understand descriptive text structures, while cue cards reduced speaking anxiety by providing prompts during presentations. Challenges included technical difficulties with Canva and limited vocabulary. Solutions involved offline mind mapping examples and additional practice with cue cards. Students reported increased condidence and enjoyment in learning. The integration of digital mind mapping and cue cards positively impacted students’ speaking. Recommendations include providing offline resources for technical issues, encouraging vocabulary practice, and further research on these tools for other text types and educational levels. Teachers should offer structured guidance to maximize the benefits of these media in EFL classrooms.
