Abstract

This study explores the representation of women’s empowerment in Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” through Halliday’s (2004) Systemic Functional Linguistics, focusing on the experiential metafunction and transitivity system. Supported by Kabeer’s (1999) empowerment framework, the analysis identifies process types material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential and connects them to empowerment dimensions: resources, agency, and achievement. Material processes dominate, portraying the protagonist as an active agent who transforms her world, reflecting agency. Mental processes show her awareness and confidence, while relational ones redefine her empowered identity. Behavioral and verbal processes illustrate recognition from others. Notably, existential processes are absent, emphasizing that she is not merely existing but actively shaping her life. The song conveys empowerment through its linguistic choices and metaphorical expressions, highlighting the power of popular music to promote gender equality.
