Abstract
Inflammation and pain are common health problems and are often treated with synthetic drugs such as NSAIDs, which can cause side effects if used long-term. As an alternative, the Tenggerese people in Ranu Pani Village utilize medicinal plants based on traditional knowledge passed down through generations. This study aims to identify and analyze medicinal plants used as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents, and evaluate their ethnopharmacological value through a quantitative approach (FUV, SUV, FL, and ICF) and a literature review. This study used mixed methods, descriptive ethnography, consisting of semi-structured interviews with 60 informants and participant observation. A total of 47 species from 26 plant families were found to be used to treat pain and inflammation. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part, with the dominant preparation method being a decoction and the most common route of administration being oral. The highest FUV value was obtained from the Acoraceae family, while the highest SUV value was achieved by Acorus calamus (dringu). All frequently used species had FL values of 100%. The highest ICF value (1.00) was found in specific pain categories such as toothache, backache, eye pain, and sore throat, indicating a high consensus among informants. Literature review results indicate that most species possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, confirmed through in vivo, in vitro, and in silico tests. These findings reinforce the potential of local plants as a source for developing effective and safe herbal medicines, and emphasize the importance of preserving indigenous ethnomedicinal knowledge.
