Abstract
The creative thinking process is a process of understanding and expressing ideas or concepts to solve a problem and to gain a deeper understanding of strategies in solving mathematical problems. This study aims to describe students' creative thinking processes in problem-solving, viewed from the cognitive styles of Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD). The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with four eighth-grade students from class VIII B at SMP Negeri 1 Bungkal as participants, selected based on the results of the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) and students’ creative thinking abilities. Data were collected through the GEFT, problem-solving tasks, and interviews, and analyzed thematically. The results of the study show that both FI and FD cognitive style subjects share similarities in the preparation, incubation, and verification stages, namely the ability to understand and write down information from the problem and attempt to find several alternative solutions. On the other hand, FI and FD subjects differ in the illumination stage: FI subjects are able to solve problems using alternative mathematical representations, whereas FD subjects have more difficulty processing the information obtained from the problem. This study involves a limited number of participants. It is recommended that future research include more subjects to obtain more representative results. Keywords : Creative Thinking, Problem Solving, Cognitive Style, Field Independent, Field Dependent.
