Abstract
This research examines the 1948 Madiun PKI rebellion. This research aims to analyze the socio-cultural conditions of the Madiun community before the rebellion, identify the socio-cultural factors that triggered the rebellion, and examine the socio-cultural impact after the event. This research uses a historical research method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through literature studies, archival documents, and contemporaneous newspapers. The analysis was conducted using a socio-cultural theoretical framework, including the concepts of social stratification, hegemony (Gramsci), charismatic leadership (Weber), and historical materialism (Marx). The results show that the socio-cultural conditions of Madiun society at that time were characterized by a sharp social stratification between the elite and the lower class (farmers and workers). Feudal hegemony and economic pressure in the colonial era created suffering and depression among the lower classes, which triggered the emergence of movements of masianism and longing for change. These rebellions erupted as the culmination of class and cultural conflicts, where the violence was a form of social revenge against the established feudal order. The post-event impact was the emergence of collective resistance, social solidarity between victims, and the negative stigma attached to the Madiun community until decades later, which shaped collective memory and social identity in the region.
