Abstract
Dating violence is a serious issue among adolescents, with significant consequences for their mental, emotional, and psychosocial development. This phenomenon is often undetected or difficult to address, trapping victims in a negative cycle that erodes their sense of purpose. In the context of recovery, forgiveness emerges as a crucial coping mechanism that can help individuals regain a sense of control and meaning after experiencing violence. This research has two main objectives: 1) to understand how dating violence manifests in the experiences of adolescent girls, and 2) to explore the factors of forgiveness that influence victims of violence in their ability to forgive. This study uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design to delve into the subjective experiences of participants. Data was collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with three female students who had a history of experiencing dating violence. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure the relevance of their experiences to the research focus. The collected data was then analyzed using a qualitative method, following four systematic stages: data collection, data reduction to identify patterns and themes, narrative data presentation, and drawing comprehensive conclusions. The findings consistently show that the dating violence experienced by the female students included verbal, non-verbal, and sexual abuse. The impact of the violence on their relationships resulted in mood swings, loss of motivation, decreased self-confidence, and a loss of emotional control, which worsened their condition. The process of forgiveness was influenced by several factors, such as social cognition, the quality of interpersonal relationships, the characteristics of the event, and personality traits. The findings of this study provide an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of dating violence and the factors that influence forgiveness, specifically among adolescent girls. This research can serve as a foundation for developing more effective prevention and recovery interventions through forgiveness, especially within guidance and counseling services.
