Abstract
Names play an important role in human life, both individually and socially. Humans use names as an essential means of communication. Names are identities, communication tools, symbols of social status, and part of culture and tradition. The process of naming is not merely about assigning a name but also involves the meanings embedded within it. Business names are not limited to the use of the Indonesian language but may also incorporate various languages and other cultural elements. This study aims to describe the forms of language use and the processes underlying the names of businesses in the University PGRI Madiun environment according to Chaer's framework. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative. The data collection techniques employed include documentation, observation and note-taking, as well as unstructured interviews with business owners. The primary data sources are the names on public signage, particularly business banners. Data analysis utilizes the Miles and Huberman data analysis model, which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results indicate that Indonesian remains the dominant language in the formation of business names, although there are some that use Indonesian mixed with foreign languages. The naming forms include the use of Indonesian, English, Indonesian-English, English-Javanese, and Indonesian-Javanese. The process of naming business locations is influenced by the mention of the inventor or creator, the mention of distinctive characteristics, the mention of parts, the mention of materials, the mention of abbreviations, the mention of similarities, and the mention of new names. A dual naming process was also found, meaning that there is more than one process behind the naming process.
