Abstract

Alienation is a sociological and psychological condition in which individuals feel disconnected from society, norms, and even from their sense of self. This concept becomes especially relevant in literature, as authors often portray alienated characters to reflect and critique the pressures of societal conformity. This study aims to explore the dimensions of alienation experienced by the main character in Sayaka Murata’s novel, Convenience Store Woman. The theory used in this research is Melvin Seeman’s five dimensions of alienation: powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, social isolation, and self-estrangement. This study also applies the sociology of literature approach to analyze how Japanese society reflects social norms that influence individual identity. The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis. The data source is the novel Convenience Store Woman, published in 2018, and the data are presented in the form of narration and dialogue related to the alienation experienced by the protagonist. The findings show that Keiko experiences all five dimensions of alienation due to her inability to meet societal expectations regarding gender, career, and social behavior. The novel also reflects these social and cultural norms as alienating forces that exclude non-conforming individuals. This study concludes that the novel not only portrays the effects of alienation, but also critiques the social structures that sustain it in modern Japanese society.
