Abstract

This study examines the variety of slang used in TikTok comment columns and viral content, as well as how the meaning, form, and function of this slang are formed and used in digital interactions. This research is motivated by the widespread use of TikTok as the most popular social media in Indonesia, which has become not only a space for entertainment but also a space for linguistic expression, especially for the younger generation. The purpose of this study is to reveal the variety of slang that has emerged, explain its meanings, analyze its formation, and identify the social function of slang use on TikTok. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with observation and documentation methods. Data were obtained from video content and comments collected using screenshots, note-taking, and transcription techniques, then analyzed through morphological processes, such as loanwords, acronyms, hyphenations, derivations, conversions, and blending. The remaining data are slang words formed through linguistic creativity, including metaphors and metonymy. The analysis of slang meanings was conducted by considering denotative and connotative meanings as well as the accompanying sociocultural context. The findings of this study indicate that the use of slang on TikTok reflects the ever-evolving dynamics of language and demonstrates how the digital generation shapes and uses language to adapt to changing times.
