Abstract

Red onions are one of the leading horticultural commodities with high economic value and serve as the primary source of livelihood for farmers in Sukomoro Subdistrict, Nganjuk Regency. However, the red onion planting process still faces various challenges, such as improper planting distances, reliance on manual labor, and non-ergonomic work postures that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders. This study aims to evaluate the existing red onion planting tool (APBM) and redesign a new ergonomic planting tool using anthropometric approaches and the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) method. The methods employed include observation, interviews, anthropometric measurements, distribution of the Nordic Body Map questionnaire, and data analysis using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The results showed that the old planting tool had a RULA score of 7 (high risk), while the redesigned tool reduced the score to 2 (low risk). Additionally, the use of the new tool improved work efficiency and farmer comfort, and significantly reduced physical strain. Therefore, the redesign of the planting tool was proven to enhance overall productivity and well-being of red onion farmers. Keywords: red onion, redesign, planting tool, ergonomics, RULA, anthropometry.
