Abstract

Writing is a fundamental skill in English learning that demands strong language proficiency, particularly in grammar, to express ideas clearly in written form. Among various text types, descriptive text aims to provide a detailed depiction of a specific object. This study aims to analyze the generic structure and grammatical problems in descriptive texts written by second-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas PGRI Madiun. It employs a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach, using documentation as the data collection technique. The subjects consist of 10 descriptive texts written by second-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas PGRI Madiun. The data analysis applies Knapp and Watkins’ (2005) genre theory to examine the generic structure, which includes the identification and description sections, and uses Yarber and Yarber’s (2010) grammatical framework, which covers nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Findings show that 9 students successfully wrote the identification section, while only 7 students managed the description section accurately. Grammatical errors were most frequently found in nouns and verbs, followed by prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, interjections, adjectives, and pronouns. These results highlight that second-semester students still face challenges in applying both generic structure and accurate grammar in writing descriptive texts, indicating the need for targeted instructional support to enhance their writing proficiency.
