Abstract

This study aimed to determine the extent to which the English for Nusantara textbook for grade VII junior high school students met the criteria of a good English textbook in two aspects, namely activities and skills, and subject and content. The approach used was descriptive qualitative, with an evaluation checklist completed by three evaluators: the researcher, an English teacher, and an English education lecturer. The findings showed that in terms of activities and skills, the book demonstrated a balance between structured and free practice, facilitated both individual and collaborative interaction, and incorporated all four language skills proportionally, although it lacked explicit activities for pronunciation. Meanwhile, in terms of subject and content, the materials were relevant, realistic, interesting, and free from negative stereotypes, but still lacked global cultural diversity and alignment with the summative evaluation system used in schools. Based on these findings, it was concluded that English for Nusantara had generally fulfilled most of the criteria of a good English textbook, although improvements were still needed in pronunciation, cultural representation, and alignment with assessment practices. The practical implications of this study include recommendations for teachers and developers to add media that support pronunciation, as well as suggestions for supervisors.
