Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of subaltern women in the novel Yang Lahir dan Berakhir di Teluk Palu by Ikerniaty Sandili and its relevance to the study of Indonesian literature. This study is motivated by the high rate of violence against women in Indonesia and the persistence of patriarchal culture that often causes women to be in a marginal position. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a feminist approach and uses Gayatri Spivak's subaltern theory. The research data are in the form of quotations, narratives, and dialogues in the novel that present women as a subaltern group. The results show that the main female character, Ziya, experiences various forms of oppression, such as sexual violence, silencing of voices, social marginalization and negative stigma from society. However, this novel also shows efforts to resist injustice. The author's perspective raises subaltern women who experience sexual violence and marginalization and also resistance to face injustice. The relevance of this research in the study of Indonesian literature lies in the importance of building awareness of gender equality, empathy, and marginalized groups in the novel Yang Lahir dan Berakhir di Teluk Palu by Ikerniaty Sandili. Keywords: representation, subaltern women, novels, learning Indonesian literature
