Abstract

Mathematical comprehension is an important aspect in mathematics learning that every student must have. However, in reality, many students still experience difficulties in understanding basic mathematical concepts because learning is still teacher-centered and the use of supporting media is minimal. Based on the results of initial observations at SDN Glonggong 04, it was found that the results of students' mathematical comprehension abilities were still low and student activities in learning were relatively passive. This study aims to improve students' mathematical comprehension abilities through the application of the Learning Cycle 5E learning model assisted by Virtual Mathematics Edu media. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) carried out in two cycles in class V of SDN Glonggong 04. The research subjects were 15 students, consisting of 8 male students and 7 female students. This study used qualitative and quantitative approaches with data collection techniques through observation, testing, and documentation. The instruments used included teaching modules, observation sheets, test questions (pre-test and post-test), and documentation during the learning process. The research was conducted following the CAR stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The results of the study indicate that the application of the Learning Cycle 5E learning model assisted by Virtual Mathematics Edu media can improve students' mathematical understanding abilities. This can be seen from the increase in students' average scores from the pre-cycle of 57.33 to 68.67 in cycle I, and increased again to 87.33 in cycle II. In addition, teacher and student activities also showed a significant increase in each cycle. Thus, the application of the Learning Cycle 5E learning model assisted by Virtual Mathematics Edu media is declared effective in improving elementary school students' mathematical understanding abilities.
