Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill that students must possess in literacy learning. This study aims to improve reading comprehension of narrative texts by implementing the SQ3R strategy with the assistance of flipbooks for fifth-grade students at SDN Klagenserut 01. This is a classroom action research conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research were 17 fifth-grade students. Data was collected using observation, tests, and documentation. The data was analyzed descriptively both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results indicate that the SQ3R strategy assisted by flipbooks was effective in improving students' reading comprehension. In cycle I, only 2 out of 17 students (11.8%) reached the minimum completeness criterion, whereas in cycle II, 13 students (76.5%) achieved it. The improvement occurred across all categories of students’ initial ability, including high, medium, and low levels. Therefore, the SQ3R strategy assisted by flipbooks can be used as an alternative method in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts in elementary schools.
