Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by the Mathematics Counting Board on the mathematics learning outcomes of second-grade elementary school students at SD Negeri Bagi 02. The background of this research is the low conceptual understanding of subtraction in mathematics, as well as the lack of student engagement during the learning process, which leads to poor learning outcomes. The research method used is a quasi-experiment with a nonequivalent control group design. This design involves one group that is then divided into two subgroups. Accordingly, the sample consisted of an experimental class and a control class. The instrument used was a pretest and posttest. Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney Test showed a significant difference between the learning outcomes of the experimental class and the control class, with a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05. This indicates that the use of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by the counting board media has a positive and significant effect on improving students’ mathematics learning outcomes. The study also shows that the use of concrete media can facilitate students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and make the learning process more engaging and meaningful. Other observed impacts include enabling students to learn without limiting their movements, and fostering critical thinking through contextual problems related to the lesson. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Problem Based Learning model assisted by the counting board can serve as an effective and innovative alternative to improve mathematics learning outcomes in lower elementary grades using simple and more contextual approaches.
