Abstract

Character education is important in shaping high-quality students. The Grade V IPAS (Science and Social Science) companion textbook in the Merdeka Curriculum serves not only to deliver academic content but also to instill character values. However, observations indicate that the presentation of these values is not yet explicit and contextual. Due to the limited number of specific studies, this research aims to analyze the character values in the textbook to support character education in elementary schools. The objectives of this study are to identify the character values contained in the Grade V IPAS companion textbook of the Merdeka Curriculum in elementary schools, to analyze how those values are presented, and to assess their relevance to the character development of students. This research employs a qualitative approach using triangulation through interviews, observations, and document analysis. It was conducted at SD Negeri Tawangrejo 1 over four months, involving Grade V teachers and students as well as the IPAS companion textbook. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model through three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that the Grade V IPAS companion textbook in the Merdeka Curriculum has integrated character values in accordance with the six dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile, both explicitly and implicitly, within the content and learning activities. These values are systematically presented through thematic approaches, project-based learning, and reflective activities contextualized to students’ daily lives. The results indicate that the textbook is relevant and effective in fostering students’ character holistically, encompassing moral, social, and intellectual aspects, and is supported by positive experiences of both teachers and students during the learning process.
