Abstract
The ever-increasing use of household electricity requires a monitoring system capable of providing real-time energy consumption data so that electricity usage can be monitored more effectively. This study aims to design and build an Internet of Things (IoT)-based household electricity consumption monitoring system using an ESP32 microcontroller and a PZEM-004T sensor, to determine the device’s ability to read electrical parameters, to evaluate the success of data transmission to Google sheets, and to compare the calculated electricity consumption and costs between the device’s measurements and calculations based on load specifications. The developed system consists of a PZEM-004T sensor to read electrical parameters, an ESP32 as the main controller, a 16×2 LCD as a local display, Google sheets for data storage, a Telegram Bot for remote monitoring, and a Buzzer and LED as warning indicators. Testing was conducted on eight types of household electrical loads: a 15-watt light bulb, a 26-watt fan, a 60-watt soldering iron, a 315-watt rice cooker, a 67-watt cell phone charger, a 65-watt laptop charger, a 350-watt iron, and a 67-watt refrigerator. Data was collected over a 2-hour period with transmission intervals of every 5 minutes. The results of the study show that the system successfully read all electrical parameters, including Voltage, Current, Power, Frequency, Power factor, electrical energy, and cost estimates for all tested loads. The data transmission test results showed a success rate of 98.96%, with 190 data points successfully transmitted and 2 data points failing out of a total of 192 data points. A comparison of electricity consumption and costs shows that the values obtained from the device closely match the calculated results for some loads, while discrepancies for other loads are due to differences between the rated Power and the actual Power during testing. Based on these results, the IoT-based electricity consumption monitoring system developed is capable of monitoring electricity consumption in real time, automatically storing data, and providing accurate information on energy usage and cost estimates.
