Abstract

This research investigates the subtitling strategies and the level of acceptability in the Indonesian subtitles of the movie “Ready Player One”. The study aims to identify the types of subtitling strategies applied and to analyze how acceptable the subtitles are for Indonesian audiences in terms of linguistic accuracy, naturalness, and cultural relevance. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using English–Indonesian subtitle pairs as the primary data. The analysis is grounded in Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategy framework and Nababan’s (2012) acceptability assessment model. The findings reveal that eight out of ten subtitling strategies were used in the movie. The most frequently applied strategies were Transfer (32%), Paraphrase (18%), and Condensation (15%), indicating the translator’s tendency to preserve meaning while adapting structure and length to subtitle constraints. In terms of acceptability, 70% of the subtitles were classified as acceptable, 20% as less acceptable, and 10% as unacceptable. Acceptable subtitles were generally accurate, natural, and culturally appropriate, whereas less acceptable and unacceptable subtitles were mainly caused by literal translations, awkward word choices, and failure to convey idiomatic expressions or emotional nuances. Overall, the study concludes that appropriate use of adaptive subtitling strategies contributes significantly to higher acceptability levels. The research highlights the importance of cultural awareness and contextual adaptation in subtitle translation and provides insights for translators and future researchers in the field of audiovisual translation.
