Abstract

This research aims to (1) Describe and explain the application of traditional game methods to improve students' language skills, (2) Describe and explain the types of traditional games that are effective for language learning, (3) Describe and explain students' responses to traditional game-based learning. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with a case study method. This research took place at IV SD Negeri Warukkalong 1, Kwadungan District, Ngawi Regency, with the subjects being class IV students, totaling 15 students. The time for conducting the research is from July to November 2024. The data source is the fifth grade teacher at SD Negeri Warukkalong 1, Kwadungan District, Ngawi Regency. The research results are as follows: (1) Description of the Application of Traditional Game-Based Learning Methods. Cycle 1 saw an increase in language skills, although the writing aspect still needed improvement. The average value increased from 65.75 to 72.75. Cycle 2, All aspects of language skills improve significantly, especially in speaking and listening. The average score increased to 81.25. (2) Effectiveness of Traditional Games. Traditional games such as engklek, hide and seek, and dragon snake have proven effective in improving language skills. Engklek, for example, improves reading and sentence construction skills. Hide and seek improves speaking and listening skills. Dragon snakes help vocabulary mastery through singing and repetition. (3) Student Response. Students show a positive response to this method. Motivation to learn increases because of a pleasant learning atmosphere. Active participation also increased, with students being more courageous in speaking and interacting. Students' social and emotional aspects also develop, with increased cooperation and communication.
