Abstract
This study aims to investigate the translation techniques employed in movie subtitles and the readability quality of those subtitles. The researcher employed Miles and Huberman's in Saldana qualitative data analysis method and selected the movie "Resident Evil: Death Island" as the object of analysis due to its popularity in Indonesia as a movie from video game adaptation. The researcher utilizes data collection techniques, including translation technique analysis based on Molina and Albir's (2002) framework. The researcher identified nine types of translation techniques applied in the movie. These include Literal Translation (69.33%) with 156 sentences, Adaptation (9.78%) with 22 sentences, Modulation (8.00%) with 18 sentences, Reduction (7.56%) with 17 sentences, Amplification (2.67%) with 6 sentences, and Borrowing (1.33%) with 3 sentences. Additionally, three techniques—Linguistic Amplification, Established Equivalent, and Linguistic Compression—are each applied to just 1 sentence (0.44% each) out of a total of 225 subtitle data points. From this, it can be concluded that Literal Translation is the dominant technique used. To assess subtitle readability, the researcher applies Nababan's (2012) readability instrument. The results indicate that 93.33% (210 sentences) are categorized as highly readable, 6.67% (15 sentences) are moderately readable, and 0% as low readability, based on evaluations by raters in this study.
